Dwarf Hamster Supplies
Dwarf hamsters, like every other kind of pet you can name, have pretty specific care requirements, and therefore pretty specific equipment requirements. They don’t require a lot of expensive stuff, but there are a few things you should definitely have so that your dwarf hamster can live a safe, healthy and happy life.
The most important decision you need to make when buying supplies for your dwarf hamster is what type of enclosure to buy. Dwarf hamsters can thrive in any of a few different kinds of enclosure, including wires cages, glass aquariums, and plastic tanks. The most important considerations are size (is the enclosure big enough?) and “escapeability” (are the bars too far apart?). Make sure your dwarf hamster has plenty of room to play, and that it can’t get out. Remember to add space for each additional hamster.
Inside your cage, you need to place a bedding material, or “substrate.” 1 or 2 inches of substrate is good over the whole floor, and an additional 4 or 5 inches on one side, so your dwarf hamster can build a nest, climb, and dig. Train your hamster to use a litter box, just like a cat! Do this by spotting your hamster’s preferred “potty” area, and place a hamster litter box right where you found the droppings. Don’t use cat litter in the potty, though, which can cause your hamster health problems! Instead, use small bits of hay or pelleted newspaper.

Hamster on his Wheel
Some form of exercise will be a welcome addition to your pet’s enclosure. Safest and most effective is a hamster rodent wheel, available in smaller sizes for dwarf hamsters.
Next on the list of important dwarf hamster supplies is the Hamster Toy. Just like dogs, your “pocket pet” needs to chew on something to keep his ever growing teeth in filed down and good shape. You can find hamster chew toys in lots of different colors and sizes, and most are made of soft wood. Check them regularly for dangerous slivers or accumulated soil.
Make certain your dwarf hamster healthy and well-hydrated by providing a continuous supply of fresh water. The best way to do this is with a suspended water bottle. These keep the enclosure from becoming a wet mess, and your hamster will learn at a young age to use these bottles. Check the bottle daily for cracks or leaks, and refill it with fresh water as needed.
Last, but not least, your hamster will want a house to build it’s nest in. Their natural shyness makes them skittish, so they will want a place to hide whenever they are nervous. Sturdy and non-chewable is your best choice here.
That addresses the major concerns for dwarf hamster supplies. For more on the varies kinds of dwarf hamsters, including Chinese dwarf hamsters, see the other articles on this site, and be sure to sign up for my free mini-course. Enjoy your pet!
